Food Sharing and Nonhuman Reciprocal Altruism

چکیده
Feeding on food that it has foraged is of great importance to ensure the fitness of an animal. Giving up this food for a conspecific is thus one of the most prominent examples of altruism. Although it may bear immediate costs for the donor, sharing food may however be beneficial on the long term. There are various examples of food sharing in the animal kingdom, most of which can be explained by mechanisms such as kin selection or reciprocity (Stevens and Gilby 2004). Meal sharing among the Ye'kwana.
In this study meal sharing is used as a way of quantifying food transfers between households. Traditional food-sharing studies measure the flow of resources between households. Meal sharing, in contrast, measures food consumption acts according to whether one is a host or a guest in the household as well as the movement of people between households in the context of food consumption. Our goal i...
متن کاملCognitive constraints on reciprocity and tolerated scrounging
Each of the food-sharing models that Gurven considers demands unique cognitive capacities. Reciprocal altruism, in particular, requires a suite of complex abilities not required by alternatives such as tolerated scrounging. Integrating cognitive constraints with comparative data from other species can illuminate the adaptive benefits of food sharing in

Cooperation among relatives is often regarded as evidence of kin selection. Yet altruism not requiring shared genes can also evolve among relatives. If characteristics of relatives (such as proximity, familiarity, or trust) make kin preferred social partners, the primary causes of nepotistic biases may reside principally in direct fitness payoffs from cooperation rather than indirect fitness pa...
متن کاملChimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) anticipation of food return: coping with waiting time in an exchange task.
Despite controversial expectations that animals achieve reciprocal altruism, it is unclear if nonhuman species possess the necessary cognitive abilities. For reciprocal altruism, individuals must anticipate the loss of a commodity and accept a delay before some return. The authors investigated the abilities of 5 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) to cope with increasing waiting duration in exchange ...
